The chaos in the desert isn’t even funny anymore, it’s just sad – starting pitcher Bronson Arroyo, who the team signed to a two-year, $23.5 million contract this offseason, will require Tommy John surgery and will miss the remainder of the 2014 season (and probably, a good chunk of 2015 as well).

Let’s try to recap what’s gone on with the National League’s worst team this year, shall we? Ace Patrick Corbin blew out his elbow in the spring and needed Tommy John surgery. Brandon McCarthy, signed prior to the 2013 season, was dealt to the Yankees for peanuts. Cody Ross, also signed two winters ago, has only played in 153 games as a Diamondback and has been awful. Mark Trumbo, one of the team’s biggest offseason acquisitions along with Arroyo, has played in just 21 games.
Wait, I’m not done yet. A.J. Pollock hasn’t played a game since the end of May, and Eric Chavez hasn’t played a game since June. Gerardo Parra followed up his breakout 2013 campaign with a below replacement 2014. Martin Prado, the main piece of the Justin Upton trade two offseason ago, has taken his second straight step back offensively. The team is paying two relievers (J.J. Putz and Heath Bell) to pitch elsewhere for them, but that’s probably a good thing in the case of Bell.
So…they’ve got all that going for them, which is nice.
