Dugout Digest – time to blow up the Padres?

DugoutDigest
The San Diego Padres are not a good team, and they are not playing good baseball right now. They’re just 3-10 in June, and since improving to 21-23 on May 17th, the team is just 8-17. Their offense is a horror show – no team has a lower batting average or on-base percentage, and only the Mets have a lower slugging percentage (and that’s by a fraction of a point). Their starting rotation is 18th in baseball with a 4.00 ERA, and only a 2.63 ERA from their bullpen has kept their pitching staff from being even more of a disaster. With the Giants still running away with the NL West (despite a three game losing streak), the Padres are 13.5 games out of first place – only the Diamondbacks are further back in all of baseball. San Diego does have some interesting pieces on their pitching staff, so maybe there could be a nice return coming in for someone like Joaquin Benoit or Huston Street. Something will need to happen, because the Padres are just a disgrace right now.

Game of the Day: Rockies 8, Giants 7. This outcome was shocking, if only because it handed the slumping Rockies a sweep over the Giants, who had been coasting through the NL West prior to losing six of seven games this week. San Francisco rolled early on, forcing starter Juan Nicasio out of the game in the third inning and battering Franklin Morales to the tune of three homers and four runs in three innings. But Madison Bumgarner began to tire in the seventh, and the Rockies cut the deficit to 7-4 after an RBI double by Josh Rutledge. In the eighth, Colorado smoked Juan Gutierrez after an RBI triple by Drew Stubbs made it 7-5 and an infield single by Michael McKenry made it 7-6. After a walk and a fielder’s choice, Javier Lopez replaced Gutierrez and promptly allowed a two-run double to Justin Morneau to give the Rockies an 8-7 lead. The Giants tried to fight back, putting Michael Morse on base in the eighth and Ehire Adrianza on base in the ninth, but the Rockies bullpen escaped both times without allowing the tying run.

Pitching Lines of the Day: Travis Wood dominated the Phillies in a 3-0 Cubs win, allowing three hits over eight shutout innings, walking three and striking out six. Hisashi Iwakuma led the Mariners to a 5-1 win over the Rangers, giving up one run on six hits in eight innings, punching out six without a walk. Vance Worley returned to the majors with the Pirates in their 3-2 loss to the Marlins, going seven shutout innings while allowing five hits, striking out five, and walking none. David Price cut the crap in Tampa Bay’s 4-3 win in Houston, giving up three runs on five hits in eight innings, striking out ten without a walk. Jaime Garcia pitched the Cardinals to a 5-2 win and a sweep over the Nationals, allowing one run on five hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out six.

Hitting Lines of the Day: Kyle Seager was a stud for the Mariners in their win, going 4/4 with two doubles, a run, and three RBI. Derek Norris powered the A’s to a 10-5 win over the Yankees, going 3/5 with a double and a three-run homer. Coco Crisp chipped in by going 2/4 with a homer, three runs, three RBI, and a walk. In Colorado’s win over San Francisco, Troy Tulowitzki went 3/4 with a homer, two runs, two RBI, and a walk. Ryan Ludwick pushed the Reds to a 13-4 win over the Brewers, going 4/5 with three doubles and two runs scored.

Other Games: The Tigers walked off on the Twins 4-3. The Mets shut down the Padres 3-1. The Blue Jays topped the Orioles 5-2. The Indians beat the Red Sox 3-2 in 11 innings. The Royals doubled up the White Sox 6-3. The Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers 6-3. The Braves rallied to beat the Angels 7-3.

Today’s Games: Jered Weaver and Trevor Bauer will face off in Cleveland. Justin Verlander and the Tigers host the Royals. Julio Teheran and Cole Hamels will face off in Philly. Jason Hammel starts for the Cubs in Miami. Jacob deGrom starts for the Mets in St. Louis against….Carlos Martinez, making a spot start for the injured Adam Wainwright. Wily Peralta starts for the Brewers in Arizona. Hyun-Jin Ryu and the Dodgers host the Rockies. Tyson Ross starts for the Padres in Seattle.

National TV: Mets-Cardinals (8 PM, ESPN)

Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
